Amid Russian ‘Aerial Terror,’ Zelensky Points to Gaza Deal as Path to Peace

Even as Russian drones and bombs continue to terrorize Ukrainian cities, President Volodymyr Zelensky is looking abroad for a glimmer of hope. On Tuesday, he seized upon the US-led Gaza peace deal as a potential model for resolving the conflict with Russia, urging President Donald Trump to apply similar decisive action to Eastern Europe.

Zelensky’s message was one of urgent optimism, stressing that the window of opportunity created by the Middle East agreement must be utilized. “Now, as the war in the Middle East comes to an end, it is important not to lose the momentum for advancing peace,” he stated, directly challenging the international community to act.

His diplomatic efforts are in full swing. Following a weekend call to congratulate President Trump, Zelensky engaged in a strategic discussion with Finnish President Alex Stubb to coordinate their next steps. He clearly believes that with the right push from the United States, a “corresponding vision” for peace in Ukraine can be realized.

The urgency of his plea was underscored by his harrowing account of Russia’s latest assaults. He described a night of “aerial terror” where 96 drones were launched at Ukraine. He detailed the devastating impact, including 57 people injured when a hospital in Kharkiv was bombed, and significant damage to energy infrastructure elsewhere.

Zelensky’s conclusion is that diplomacy alone is not enough. He insisted that the world must compel Moscow to negotiate while simultaneously strengthening Ukraine’s defenses. His specific request for more air defense systems is a testament to his belief in “peace through strength” as the only viable path forward.
