Japan’s Emperor Naruhito inaugurated the 20th Asian Games on Saturday, during a vibrant ceremony at a stadium in Nagoya. This event marks the commencement of Asia’s largest multi-sport competition, featuring more than 11,000 athletes from 45 nations and territories.
The opening ceremony, attended by prominent figures such as Empress Masako and International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry, set the stage for a diverse array of competitions. Over 40 sports will be contested, including traditional disciplines like athletics and swimming, alongside unique events such as kabaddi, sepak takraw, and the debut of eSports and mixed martial arts.
Organizers have faced several logistical hurdles leading up to the Games, including heavy flooding in Nagoya and transportation issues. Athletes have also raised concerns about accommodation, adding to the challenges of hosting such a large-scale event.
The competition holds additional importance as it offers qualification opportunities for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles for seven sports, heightening the stakes for numerous athletes. The first gold medals are anticipated to be awarded on Sunday, with events running until October 4.
Countries like India, China, and Japan are expected to be strong contenders, with many young athletes drawing significant attention. As the Games unfold, these competitors aim to leave their mark on the international stage.
