Qatar Pledges Continued Backing to International Seabed Authority

During the 31st Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in Kingston, Jamaica, Qatar reiterated its support for the ISA and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Omar Ali Al Ali, who serves as the Secretary of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Law of the Sea, represented Qatar at the event.

Al Ali highlighted the importance of striking a balance between the responsible utilization of marine resources and the protection of the marine environment. He emphasized the necessity for enhanced dialogue, transparency, and credible scientific research to bolster decision-making processes within the Authority. Additionally, he underscored the significance of comprehensive environmental assessments in this context.

Qatar’s commitment to collaborating with all member states to fulfill the ISA’s mandate was also underscored at the assembly. The nation expressed its intention to aid in managing international seabed resources in accordance with international law, aiming to ensure these efforts benefit humanity as a whole.
